Melvin Rettell
Head Coach
With more than 32 years of experience coaching hockey across a wide range of levels, Coach Melvin Rettell has had the privilege of starting at the grassroots with U6 kids, progressing through house and travel teams, and ultimately dedicating 22 years to coaching at the high school level before transitioning to SVSU. Last season, he led the Men’s D1 program, and is now thrilled to announce that he'll be taking over the Women’s D2 program beginning with the 2026-27 season. As a retired Special Education Teacher with 41 years of service and a master’s degree in teaching, SVSU is grateful for the wealth of knowledge and passion he brings to the role.
Throughout his career, Rettell has played a key role in launching both new travel and high school hockey programs, gaining valuable insights along the way. Now, he's eager to elevate the new Women’s program to its highest potential. Supported by a talented staff and the backing of the Men’s program, his aim is to transform SVSU into a premier destination for hockey—a true hotbed for the sport that will thrive for years to come.
Karissa Grapp
Assistant Coach
(Goaltenders and Defense)
Coach Karissa Grapp played her youth hockey career as a goaltender in the Mid-Michigan area and spent her senior year playing for Belle Tire AAA, one of the top youth hockey programs in the Michigan. She continued her playing career with the NCAA Division I women’s hockey program at the University of Minnesota Duluth, gaining valuable insight into the standards and expectations of a nationally competitive collegiate program.
Before transitioning to coaching at the collegiate level, Grapp coached girls high school hockey in the Mid‑Michigan region, where she emphasized skill development, mentorship, and preparing student‑athletes for advancement in both hockey and academics. That background allows her to relate to players at different stages of their development and support their progression within the SVSU program.
Off the ice, Grapp brings a unique professional perspective to the program. She works full-time as a Chemical Engineer at Dow Chemical, balancing her engineering career with her commitment to developing student-athletes. Her analytical mindset, leadership skills, and firsthand experience as a high-level player allow her to connect with athletes and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the program.
Amanda Grapp
Assistant Coach
(Forwards)
Coach Amanda Grapp (Conway) brings a high-level of playing experience and knowledge to the bench, including the highest level of collegiate women’s hockey as a former NCAA Division 1 women’s hockey player at Minnesota State University, Mankato from 2014-2018. Originally from Naperville, Illinois - Grapp developed her strong hockey foundation competing with the elite Tier I AAA Chicago Mission Girls Hockey Program.
Coach Amanda is excited to take her passion for hockey and coaching to the next level with the inaugural collegiate team at SVSU, as she transitions from her rewarding time coaching girls high school hockey in the Mid-Michigan area.
Off the ice, she holds a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy and works full-time at MyMichigan hospital in Midland. Already a Cardinal prior to joining the coaching staff, she also serves as an adjunct faculty member for the Occupational Therapy program at SVSU.
Coach Amanda is ready to make an impact coming into this season with a coaching philosophy rooted in developing resilient and competitive student-athletes that will succeed on the ice and in the classroom. Emphasizing skill development and personal growth, while fostering a supportive team-first culture.
